One day trip

If your holiday in Rome is not too short, or if you have at least a week of time, you might consider enriching your visit with a trip to Rome (in Italian it is called “trip out of town” or visit “hit and run”) from morning to evening.
I want to suggest some of my favorite destinations, but also from all the tourists to whom I have suggested them and they were thrilled!

Let’s start with a half day or full day trip to Tivoli.

If you only have half a day I suggest you take a local train from Termini Station and go to Tivoli. From the station, walk in a few minutes to VILLA D’ESTE, an extraordinary villa especially outside for its many monumental fountains, truly spectacular! Your children will also love them if you are traveling as a family.

If, on the other hand, you have a whole day, after having dedicated the morning to the first Villa, you can take a shuttle to reach a second beautiful location near Tivoli in half an hour, Villa ADRIANA.

You can return to Tivoli earlier and to Rome by train to be home in Rome by dinner time.

Especially in spring and summer another nice trip that I suggest is on the Roman coast and to be precise in Ostia Antica, where there is an important archaeological site. Ostia can also be reached in half an hour by local train.

If you go to Ostia and you have chosen a beautiful day, I recommend that you complete your day with a fish lunch in one of the excellent restaurants overlooking the sea. If the bathing season has started (usually from June to September) you could go to an equipped beach.

For the next tip, we move from the coast to an inland part of Lazio, very green and rich in aquifers: LAKE BRACCIANO.

The lake bathes three very picturesque villages, Bracciano, Anguillara and Trevignano. In Bracciano you can visit the castle and the historic center, Anguillara and Trevignano are small pearls of historic villages overlooking the lake.

The lights and colors will give you extraordinary photos and moments of total relaxation. You can also take a local train to Bracciano (for info on how to get there, visit https://braccianoguide.com/it/come-arrivare-bracciano-mezzi/). In summer, the connection service of the three villages with a characteristic boat works, for info on navigation https://www.consorziolagodibracciano.it/navigazione/avvisi-disponibilita/. During the summer, by organizing yourself with a rented car to have more freedom of movement, you can also organize yourself for bathing or water sports at one of the equipped beaches (in particular in Trevignano or Anguillara).

Finally I suggest a last but no less beautiful destination, in southern Rome in the high hills where especially in the hottest periods there is greater coolness in the “ROMAN CASTLES” (Ariccia, Albano, Castel Gandolfo, Frascati, Rocca di Papa are just a few ) You will be able to admire a beautiful panorama, try one of the many characteristic trattorias and going to Castel Gandolfo and Albano, you will also be able to admire the homonymous lakes.
